CHARITY FOUNDATION FOR PROTECTION OF FREEDOM OF SPEECH ANNOUNCED WINNERS OF EKO-UKRAINA CONTEST
The press conference of Charity Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech took place in Kyiv on August 20. During the event, Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of the Foundation Hanna Herman and members of the Supervisory Board of the Foundation announced the winners of the competition of journalistic works devoted to the problem of deforestation Eko-Ukraina. The journalists who won the nominations received certificates for a charitable monetary award and statuettes.
The third place was taken by Ukrinform correspondent Valentyn Marchuk in the nomination “World experience in environmental protection and management.” The journalist noted that he has been observing illegal deforestation since childhood:
“As a person from the village, I saw how people help foresters illegally cut down Ukrainian forests since childhood. I saw how people bypassing the employees of the State Ecological Inspectorate of Ukraine and the State Forest Resources Agency of Ukraine engaged in this “black” industry. I saw how the foresters themselves organize large-scale corruption schemes. Moreover, I have seen the criminals, with the support of high-ranking officials, organize business against the background of illegal logging. Honestly, I am tired of this. Your competition is a small step to hear about it and finally start doing something,” Valentyn Marchuk said.
The winner of the nomination “Agreement on European integration and the problem of exporting Ukrainian forests abroad” is editor-in-chief and journalist of PavlovskyNews Andriy Pavlovsky. The story of Volyn activist Roman Yakymchuk prompted Andriy to participate in the contest:
“A 20-year-old resident of Volyn, activist Roman Yakymchuk turned to me, and I was shocked by his story. There are about 50 sawmills in the small village of Stobykhivka in Volyn region, and the surrounding forests are being cut down. In my opinion, Roman deserves this grant, so we will pass these funds to him. Especially since he wants to study and become an investigative journalist in the future,” Andriy Pavlovsky stressed.

Oleg Reshetnyak, a journalist, cameraman, screenwriter and director of Як Решетняк YouTube channel, won in the nomination “The Ukrainian Carpathians, as a mirror of the problem of destruction of Ukrainian forests.” Prize fund in the nomination is 50,000 UAH. For Oleg, the issue of the forest is personal:
“Illegal loggers cover their crimes with fires or accidents. Self-proclaimed “princes” have everything: money, connections, police loyalty and even weapons and their own army. The forest story is personal to me. A few years ago, searching for the truth, I received injuries of moderate severity. But it only fanned journalistic curiosity and a thirst for justice,” Oleg Reshetnyak said.
Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of the Foundation Hanna Herman announced that the journalist contest devoted to the problem of deforestation Eko-Ukraina will be held annually and invited all journalists interested in the topic of deforestation of the Ukrainian forest to participate.
