Statement of the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Foundation regarding the closure of Kyiv Post

Head of the Supervisory Board of the Charity Foundation for Protection of Freedom of Speech Hanna Herman commented on the incident surrounding the Kyiv Post.

“The closure of the Kyiv Post indicates that processes are continuing in the media space, which we practically do not observe in free democratic countries. I do not want to say that we are dealing with a restriction of freedom of speech for political reasons, because the statements of the owner and the team of journalists contradict each other. I cannot rule out that the owner decided to close the agency due to pressure from the authorities. Bankova Street has extensive experience in this: it is worth mentioning the out-of-court decision to stop broadcasting of three opposition TV channels with a multimillion audience. In the current situation, I would advise Kyiv Post journalists to ask the relevant committee of the Verkhovna Rada to assess the case with appropriate decisions. On this occasion, I would like to note that the media community at one time reacted rather sluggishly to the closure of authoritative TV channels. If in the case of Kyiv Post it turns out that there was indeed pressure on the owner, you should not be surprised. I will say more: the closures will continue. The absence of public protests against the oppression of freedom of speech in Ukraine will push the authorities to act in a similar way. Who is next will be heard in the near future. Our Foundation will, of course, react to this story if the version with pressure is confirmed,” Hanna Herman commented.
